Southampton Music Services, part of Southampton City Council's Children's Services and Learning, is responsible for supporting music in schools, for peripatetic instrumental and vocal tuition and for the bands, choirs and orchestras in the city available to children and young people. Over the years, Southampton has built up a reputation as the finest city in the country for music provision.  Our job is to ensure it continues to flourish.

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC SERVICES MISSION STATEMENT

"The City of Southampton Music Service exists to support and develop the full musical potential of all Southampton's young people."

This will be achieved by ensuring:

Curricular Provision in Schools:

  • Entitlement to a high quality, exciting, experiential, broadly based music curriculum for all children from 4 to 14.
  • Access to high quality examination courses in music for all interested students between 14 and 18.

OFSTED Summary of Curriculum Teaching in Southampton

Peripatetic Instrumental and Vocal Tuition:

  • Access for all interested children to a wide range of high quality vocal and instrumental tuition from a broad range of music's which reflect the ethnic and social mix of the city.  This tuition extending and complementing the National Curriculum and providing the necessary specialist provision for GCSE, A level and other certificated music courses.
  • Value for money for tuition.
  • Coherence and co-ordination between school based and visiting staff.

Performing Opportunities:

  • Balanced pyramids of performing opportunities to enable all interested young people to participate within a wide range of musical genres and styles, developing their ensemble and other performing skills whilst striving for the highest quality.
  • Regular opportunities to work with and learn from professional performers who work in national and international contexts.
  • Workshops, concerts and recitals from visiting artists to enhance and extend curricular provision.
  • A bridge to community music making activities.

In summary, the City of Southampton Music Service is committed to opportunity and excellence with all young people valued for their intrinsic worth and potential.  All our staff are expected to abide by the above principles when carrying out tasks on behalf of the City of Southampton.
