Hiring Southampton City Instruments

Policy:
Southampton Music Services has committed to ensuring that no pupil is forced to give up learning because there is no instrument available for them to use.  Standards Fund money has been made available for the purchase of equipment.

Instruments issued to individual pupils will move through the school system with them, rather than remaining with the school at which they started lessons.  New instruments / instruments from school leavers will be fed back into the system as required.

Loan Conditions:
There are conditions that pupils must adhere to when hiring an instrument, they are the following:

  • To participate (if appropriate) in a City Ensemble.
  • To be committed to lessons and to practise regularly.
  • To look after the instrument and to pay £16 to Southampton City Council for the loan agreement.

If you require an instrument, please contact your instrumental teacher in the first instance.  They will provide you with an Instrument Loan Agreement Form, which you can also download here and either fax or post it to us.

Only when the Instrument Loan Agreement Form and cheque for £16 is back with your teacher or sent directly to Southampton Music Service, you will be allowed to take the instrument home.

Hire Charge

If your child does not receive Peripatetic Music lessons from a Southampton Peripatetic Music teacher at a Southampton City School then you will be able to hire an instrument only if your child is a member of a Southampton City ensemble.  Please click here to download the form, and to view the hire charge costs.

Repairs:
If an instrument needs repairing the pupil should contact their instrument teacher immediately who will then arrange this with Administrative Staff.

Please do not try and fix the instrument yourself.  The most frequent source of additional repair costs is through well-meaning parents trying to repair the instrument!  Ensure that only the child's Teacher or an approved repair technician undertakes any adjustments/repairs.

Instrument Returns:
If you are leaving school or an ensemble please ensure you hand your instrument back to your teacher, as this instrument will then be fed back into the system for someone else to use.  If you require it for a longer period of time please contact us.
